A section of Nandi politicians has come to the defense of Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago over his interest in vying for the Senatorial seat in the 2022 general election.
Mandago has already declared that he would vie for the Senate seat, once his second term as a governor comes to an end.
The declaration has, however, received opposition from some political leaders in Uasin Gishu, led by Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi who holds the view that the governor should be campaigning for Deputy President Willian Ruto – at a national level and not engage in local politicians.

But according to the Nandi politicians, Mandago has every right to vie for any seat he wishes, so that he remains politically relevant.
Led by Aldai Member of Parliament Cornelly Serem, the leaders say the governor is the future leader of the Kalenjin community after DP Ruto.

“Mandago when you’re there, in Kalenjin, after DP Ruto it’s none other than you. You can go for any seat in Uasin Gishu,” Serem said.
“Gavana Mandago tuko na wewe, pigania kitu chochote. We’re supporting you, hao vibaraka wanajifanya hao ndio wanajua siasa fundisha hao siasa,” he added.

The Nandi politicians also hit out at Sudi, accusing him of attempting to plan for the people of Uasin Gishu on who should be their leader.
“There’s no other leader who will plan for others, it’s only the grassroots that will decide. Senate is the upper house and no politician should teach us who we elect and whom we don’t elect,” noted former councilor Paul Kerich.

While asking Mandago to drop his Senatorial bid, Sudi suggested that the seat should be left to the young aspirants.

Some of the youthful individuals seeking the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket for the Senate seat include lawyer Kipchumba Karori, broadcaster Robert Arap Kemei and lawyer Yator Too.
