December 4, 2021, marked a historic celebration of rising hope for rehabilitated women brewers in Elgeyo Marakwet dubbed women of change.
The day will go down in the books of history as a day to celebrate the hope of women who have seen new hope and light following turning over a new leaf.
They left brewing for alternative income-generating activities. Their testament is a sign of hope for many other brewers and their associated clients.
The rehabilitation program has been championed by Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos in partnership with Empowering Lives International (ELI) headed by Samuel Teimuge and the team.
Ruth Kimoi, one of the most notorious brewers was being celebrated for her decision to quit brewing for better alternative ways.
Today, she is a very successful woman in business, education, religion and leads a very successful life worth emulating by all and sundry.
Governor Tolgos led the team comprising ELI team, MCAs (Metkei) and (Soy South), Women of Change, Chiefs, and County staff in hiking a 5-kilometers steep slope from Kocholwo to Tabare.
The hiking to the top of Tabare was symbolic as it signifies women rising from ashes of alcoholism to the grace of a dignified life, thanks to their rehabilitation.
They thanked the Governor and ELI for rescuing them from the jaws of poverty and shame, to that of prosperity and dignity.
