The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is set to launch on March 1, 2024. This will represent a significant step in transforming Kenya’s healthcare system.
According to Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has, SHIF aims to provide comprehensive coverage, including screening, dialysis, transplants, medications, and equipment, to all Kenyans, particularly vulnerable populations.
It will replace the current National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
“With approval secured, the Ministry will initiate registration next month, moving towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and emphasizing preventive healthcare,” the CS said.
She further highlighted the government’s commitment to decentralizing healthcare services, bridging the gap between basic community facilities and advanced medical centers.
The Health CS made the remarks during a prayer service graced by the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at St Andrew’s Catholic Church in Kwanza Constituency, Trans Nzoia County on Sunday.
