Efforts to Reintroduce Pyrethrum Farming in Elgeyo Marakwet Rolled Out

The journey of reintroducing pyrethrum growing in Elgeyo Marakwet County kicked off officially on Friday, June 24, 2022, at Chebulbai, Moiben Kuserwo Ward.

Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Wisely Rotich presided over the official launch of the program.

Rotich, who is also the gubernatorial candidate for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party in the upcoming poll expressed gratitude to hundreds of farmers who have shown interest in the cash crop, which he said will economically empower them.

During the event, Kentegra Biotechnology Holdings gave farmers pyrethrum seeds, enough to be planted on 125 acres of land.

More than 400 farmers have so far signed contracts with Kentegra.

Currently, the minimum buying price for pyrethrum is Ksh220 per kilogram and can go up to Ksh380 per kilogram, depending on pyrethrum content.

Some of the farmers that benefited from the pyrethrum seeds given to them by Kentegra Biotechnology Holdings.

He pointed out that the program will be introduced to Metkei Kabiemit, Kaptarakwa, Chepkorio Kamariny,Kapchemutwa, Moiben Kuserwo, Lelan, Sengwer, Cherangany Chebororwo, Kapsowar, Kapyego, Sambirir and Embobut Embolot wards.

Once elected to office, we will be engaging more partners and investors on suitable crops to be planted in the valley, along the escarpments and in the highlands,” the UDA gubernatorial candidate said.
