The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Victor Okioma, on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, visited Elgeyo Marakwet County to check the progress on operationalizing the Iten rehabilitation center.
The center was officially commissioned In April 2019 by the then Chairman for NACADA Rtd. Lt. Col Julius Ayub.
The County together with the NACADA and National Government team have been working hand in hand to strengthen the licensing process.
The NACADA CEO insisted on the need to form a baseline survey that will help form programs to be used as the activities at the rehabilitation center and beyond.
“This survey will also act as a guideline to know what areas and what substances are used within the community,” he said.
The Elgeyo Marakwet County Secretary Paul Chemmuttut noted that licensing has been among the best strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol so as to improve the health and social outcomes for individuals, families, and community level.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Abraham Barsosio applauded the NACADA Team for being the Lead Agency in the fight against alcohol and drug abuse in the country.
And as the Iten rehabilitation center is preparing for the opening, it received the furniture.
Also in attendance was the County Commissioner John Korir, the Regional Manager for North Rift Eunice Ambia, Chief Officer Bett Nicholas, Assistant County Commissioner Eric Chege, Acting County Director for Alcoholics David Kandie, Julius Maiyo (DCC Keiyo North), among other county staff.
