Ksh19M Set Aside to Support Farmers Affected by Desert Locusts in Elgeyo Marakwet

The Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet County Eng. Alex Tolgos on Saturday, May 27, 2022, launched an Emergency Locust Response Project (ELRP) in Chepsirei, Soy South ward.

The project seeks to cushion farmers who lost their harvest to desert locust invasion between 2019-2021.

Under this project, 5,722 farmers from 10 wards benefit.

The project is currently being implemented in Endo, Arror, Emsoo and Soy South wards.

A total of 108 groups were funded to a tune of Ksh185,000 per group (A total of Ksh19,980,000) across the 4 wards.

The groups led by their respective CDDCs are going to implement dairy goats, dorper rams, beans, green grams, groundnuts and coffee value chains

The project is expected to expand to three other wards (Tambach, Sambirir and Soy North) by next year.

The level of funding for the groups is also expected to rise from Ksh185,000 to Ksh400,000 per group
