Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced the creation of three subregions in Nairobi.
Murkomen said the latest move is part of the national government’s effort to improve service delivery to the residents.
In a statement posted on his verified social media pages, the CS said the decision was also in fulfilment of a promise he made during the Jukwaa la Usalama public forums.
“During the recently concluded Jukwaa La Usalama public forums, we promised to restructure and reinvigorate the National Administration to better serve the people of Kenya. We are committed to bringing services closer to wananchi through deliberate decentralisation and efficiency enhancement,” Murkomen said.
Which are the new subregions in Nairobi?
The newly created Nairobi sub-regions are Nairobi North, Nairobi East, and Nairobi West Service Delivery Coordination Units.

Murkomen said the new units are due to the region’s high population.
“To improve service delivery to the residents, three subregions have been created in Nairobi. The creation of Nairobi North, Nairobi East, and Nairobi West Service Delivery Coordination Units has been made necessary by the high population of the capital city, now estimated at more than five million,” the CS said.
At the same time, Murkomen announced the promotion of three officials serving in the rank of County Commissioner and appointed them to administer the new subregions.
Who will be in charge of the new Nairobi sub-regions?
- Rose Wanjiru Chege – Nairobi West Sub Region
- Patrick Simiyu Werre – Nairobi East Sub Region
- Simon Odhiambo Osumba – Nairobi North Sub Region
“The three will report to the Regional Commissioner, Nairobi Region,” the CS further said.
List of 6 new county commissioners
Meanwhile, Murkomen said as part of ongoing efforts to streamline operations within the National Government Administration, he had promoted and posted the six officers in the rank of County Commissioner:
The six are:
- Tana River – Joseph Mwangi Wamuti
- Taita Taveta – Linda Adhiambo Okola
- West Pokot – David Ntawuasa Saruni
- Kajiado – Michael K. Yator
- Kericho – Jeremiah Mwai Gicheru
- Vihiga – Peter Mwangi Maina

The CS also said he had transferred several serving County Commissioners to various new stations, taking into consideration their strengths and experiences.
This is even as he noted that the government continues to address the various security as well as service delivery concerns raised by wananchi during the Jukwaa La Usalama public forums.
“The changes take effect with immediate effect,” Murkomen said.
