No Bursaries for Students Whose Parents Are Not Voters in Soy Constituency

//

Tens of needy students from Soy Constituency have missed out on benefiting from the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) bursary kitty.

This is after it emerged that their parents are not voters in the constituency.

Soy Member of Parliament David Kiplagat (DK) says students whose parents are registered voters outside the constituency were deliberately left out of the list of the beneficiaries.

Kiplagat says during the vetting for those to benefit from the bursaries, details of parents of students who had applied to be considered were checked against the IEBC data to ensure they are registered voters in the constituency.

The legislator said it was shocking that parents of some of the applicants were living in Soy but are registered voters outside the constituency.

Get bursaries from where you vote, MP tells parents

There are so many parents we had to leave. We said we cannot do anything with such a situation because even where they vote they have bursaries they can benefit from,” Kiplagat said.

Some parents are crying for the decision they made for their own. They live in Soy but vote in Likuyani. But because I know some basics of ICT, if you don’t vote in Soy you will be left out by the computer,” he added.

The MP however noted that the only way such parents can be considered for the bursaries is if they become registered voters in Soy Constituency.

But the legislator said he is ready to support such parents if they invite him for harambee.

For those parents we’re a bit saddened, but we can’t do anything. We can only sympathize, but ukituita harambee tutakuja….lakini wewe kama mzazi you know what to do. If you live in Soy, be a voter in Soy. Hata leo kama IEBC imefunguliwa, enda badilisha mahali ya kupiga kura then we can talk,” the Soy MP said.

Four-year sponsorship

He spoke during the disbursement of over Ksh7 million NG-CDF bursaries to over 100 beneficiaries selected from across the constituency.

75 needy students from across the Constituency were sponsored with a whole four-year school fees to Loreto Matunda.

A further 60 boys were sp9s8red5 to join the schools they have been admitted.

We are also finalising on sponsoring between 50-100 students per school in all our 46 secondary schools that would bring to about 3000 vulnerable students,” the MP said.

The constituency is at the border of Uasin Gishu and several counties among them Kakamega and Trans Nzoia.
