For the past few months, over 30 schools across the country have been affected by students unrest – some leading to dormitories being burnt and school properties destroyed.
Cabinet Secretary for Education Professor George Magoha recently called for a return of cane in schools, in what he said would restore discipline among students.
His remarks sound healthy to secure this and the coming generation.
Discipline makes students refrain from immorality such as dishonesty, brutality, disrespect, abusive language, alcohol drinking, drug abuse, just to mention a few.
Moral decay is the poison to the academic performance and atmosphere of society.
Nevertheless, introducing caning in schools is a vital step in students life and the society as a whole. It gives a pathway for the students to chase their ambitions and dreams.
They will focus on their studies and hope to be important people or adults in the future.
Reduction of the self-decision making on matters concerning school issues affecting students will fear to make their own decisions when school operations will not be good at that time.
Discipline will teach them the best way to air their grievances through the right channels thus, the school administration will be aware of what is affecting students. In return, they will give solutions to the problems.
Moreso, the creation of self-awareness will enhance students to know what is good and wrong. Not only that but also the knowledge about the consequences of each act. They will be able to know between the positive and negative consequences of their actions.
After inducing good manners through punishment and whipping, the learners will serve as role models of the young ones from primary and the ones in the society and also the coming generations when they are adults.
Nonetheless, every student will be accountable for their acts. This will be a good notion of the behaviors. They will exercise to do what is good from bad and right from wrong.
With a deep breath, I sound loudly without regret that, resuming punishment like canning in school is the best savior for dilly-dallying young generation.
