Opinion: Set Up Rehabilitation Centers for Students who are Drug Addicts

For many years, stress, depression, and peer pressure are the main reasons people especially youth enter into drug abuse and alcohol drinking. The more they consume, the more addicted they become.

Government Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, NACADA, and the entire society have for a long time been on the frontline to fight drug abuse among youth. Some drug dealers have been arrested but a majority of them are anonymous, posing a great challenge to the security department.

These students who are drug addicts, a majority have awful behaviors that land them to illegal activities and crimes. It has been so difficult for the school administration and parents/guardians for them to detect those students and drug dealers.

CS Magoha.

There is a proposal from the Ministry of Education by Cabinet Secretary, Professor George Magoha, that every student gets tested so as to be able to know if they are involved in drug abuse and alcohol. This is to curb the increase of indiscipline in schools. This is a good move!

In case they find out the students who are suspected of drug abuse, I urge the Ministry of Education to provide forums for guidance and counseling.

After the counseling, they can freely send them to the rehab centers. Not only that but also to ensure they have fully recovered and changed their behaviors before they release them.

Government should also increase and build more rehab centers countrywide. This has to be achieved through sponsorship, grants, and funds from NACADA and NGOs. This will speed up the setting up of these centers.

The Ministry of Education together with NACADA further need to put in place necessary measures to curb the challenge of drug abuse that is killing the future of youths and their health.

There are many vital benefits of testing students on drug abuse consumption. It will enhance discipline among students hence accelerating their academic performance. Drop-out cases and premature sexual relationships will reduce.

Rehabilitation corrects bad behaviors thus molding students into good and integrity adults of tomorrow.
