In a significant development for air travel in Kenya, Kenya Airways on March 25, 2024, resumed flights to Eldoret after a 10-year hiatus.
The revival of this crucial air route marks a noteworthy milestone in enhancing connectivity and accessibility within the country.
The flag-off ceremony, held at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), was graced by key dignitaries, including the Ministry of Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Eng. John Barorot, Kimilili Member of Parliament who is also the Vice Chair of the Parliamentary Committee of Transport and Infrastructure, Dismus Barasa and Transport Principal Secretary Mohammed Dagar.
Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board Chairman Caleb Kositany, KAA’s acting Managing Director Henry Ogoye, and acting General Manager in charge of JKIA Selina Gor were also present.
“Their presence underscored the significance of reinstating this vital air link between Nairobi and Eldoret,” KAA said.
Eldoret International Airport holds a special place in Kenya’s aviation history as a key gateway to the Rift Valley region.
KAA notes that the resumption of Kenya Airways flights to Eldoret reflects its collective vision to not only expand air travel opportunities, but also promote regional integration, and support the socio-economic aspirations of the region.
Notably, Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii received the inaugural flight at Eldoret International Airport, highlighting the event’s significance for the local community and beyond.
Impact of Kenya Airways’ return to Eldoret
With an extensive route network offering connections to 44 direct destinations across four continents, including 37 destinations within Africa, Kenya Airways plays a pivotal role in connecting people as well as businesses globally.
The reinstatement of the Eldoret route will also provide essential connections for students, farmers, traders, and sportspeople, creating new opportunities and markets.
