Sports Kenya has set December 2926 as the expected competition date for the ongoing construction works at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
Works on the stadium have been ongoing for over 10 years now following a myriad of challenges including financial constraints.
The government has also changed contractors for the project multiple times due to alleged poor workmanship.
Sports Kenya is however happy with the current contractor who as been on site since November 2025.
What is the current state of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret
According to Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Limo, Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret is now at 36% complete.

Addressing the press during the assessment of the ongoing works on Friday, April 10, 2026, Limo said the project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
“The contractor has been on site for five months and the stadium is now 36% complete. The work is going on at the right pace and with all factors remaining constant, we expect the project to be ready by December 2026,” he said.
Will Kipchoge Keino Stadium be used for AFCON 2027?
The Sports Kenya Director General also revealed that Kipchoge Keino is one of the stadiums they have submitted to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) as alternative venues for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Kenya will co-host the continental football showpiece alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
“We have presented to CAF Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret as an alternative venue for AFCON just in case they consider hosting some matches outside Nairobi,” Limo said.
Under construction Raila Odinga International Stadium – Talanta and Moi Sports Center Kasarani are the stadiums expected to host AFCON in 2027 with Nyayo National Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Club Complex being training grounds.

What is Kipchoge Keino Stadium capacity?
With the ongoing works, Kipchoge Keino Stadium is expected to be Category 3 stadium as per CAF standards.
It will have a capacity of more than 15,000 people, making it the fourth largest sports facility in Kenya.
Part of the ongoing works include improvement on the football pitch, tartan running track, terraces and VIP podium.
The project currently has a pending bill of Ksh 700 million but Sports Kenya assured that funds will be available.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly Sports Committee said it was impressed with the progress the stadium has made in the last few months.
Committee Chairperson Dan Wanyama also assured of their commitment to ensure contractors are paid on time.

Wanyama said the government has allocated Ksh 11 billion for construction of stadiums across the country.
“There is reasonable improvement on what is going on here and we want to assure the contractor that the government will pay all the money,” the MP said.
