National Treasury Approves Eldoret Solar Street Lighting Project

Eldoret City is set for a major transformation of its street lighting system.

The National Treasury’s Public Private Partnership Committee on Thursday, April 9, 2026 approved the Eldoret Solar Street Lighting Project.

According to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim, the project will be implemented under the Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Under the project, over 20,000 solar-powered LED streetlights will be installed across Eldoret City.

In addition, at least 500 AI-enabled CCTV cameras will also be installed in the City of Champions.

The project, which Governor Bii says will ensure Eldoret shines brighter than ever, will also include a public WiFi and a command centre.

Today, the Eldoret Solar Street Lighting Project under Public Private Partnership (PPP) has been approved to proceed to contracting and commencement by the National Treasury’s PPP Committee,” the governor said.

With over 20,000 solar-powered LED streetlights, 500 AI-enabled CCTV cameras, 200 km of high-speed fibre optic network, public WiFi, and a 24/7 command centre, this project will transform Eldoret into a safe, green, and thriving city for all residents,” he added.

Bii made the announcement after a briefing with Treasury Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo alongside the Principal Secretary for Economic Planning, Public Investments, Roads and Infrastructure, the Solicitor General, the Treasury, and the Director General of PPP with his secretariat in Nairobi.
