The race is usually held on October 20th, in memory of Koitalel Arap Samoei, an Orkoiyot, the supreme chief of the Nandi people of Kenya who led the Nandi resistance against British colonial rule.
Koitalel was shot at point-blank range on October 19, 1905, by British intelligence officer Richard Meinertzhagen at Ketbarak – present-day Nandi Bears Club.
