The ongoing construction of the 64 Market in Uasin Gishu County, now close to 50 per cent complete, is set to be a major relief for traders who have long grappled with challenges such as limited operating space.
Located at the heart of Eldoret City, the state-of-the-art six-storey building with two basements will accommodate over 4,000 traders, easing congestion significantly.
The multi-million project will feature modern facilities, including internet connectivity, washrooms, reliable water supply, electricity, and lactation rooms, among others.

Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim said once the market is complete, it will not only empower traders but also help in economic growth.
“Our ultra-modern market is steadily rising at the heart of our City. This multi-storey facility will empower our traders and anchor the growth of our economy,” Chelilim said.
Speaking during a site visit to inspect progress on August 22, 2025, Uasin Gishu County Executive for Trade and Cooperatives, Martha Cheruto, accompanied by Trade Chief Officer Felix Kimaru, commended the ongoing works and urged the contractor to maintain the current pace.

“It has been the wish of H.E. Governor Jonathan Bii to see this facility completed and operational to address the challenges faced by traders, particularly the lack of space and essential amenities,” said Cheruto.
How many ESP Markets are under construction in Uasin Gishu?
To further boost the local economy and provide improved infrastructure for traders and residents, the County Government of Uasin Gishu, in partnership with the National Government, is constructing markets under the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP).
The markets, designed to support small-scale traders and improve trading conditions, are expected to play a key role in driving economic growth in the county.
Currently, Uasin Gishu County is developing seven ESP markets across the six sub-counties.
Trade and Cooperatives CECM Martha Cheruto, together with Trade CO Felix Kimaru, while on a site visit to the projects on Friday, August 22, 2025, in Ainabkoi, Kesses, and Kapseret sub-counties, said the visit was part of the department’s preparedness in planning the allocation of available slots to traders.
The projects feature modern amenities, including cold storage facilities, breastfeeding rooms, smart stalls, and infrastructure to support persons with disabilities.
