Mothers are always the ones shouldering the burden of taking care of disabled children in the family but they want that to change.
Some of the mothers taking care of children with disabilities have asked fathers to also take part in the upbringing journey.
Rose Kavuli, a mother with a child with autism argues that while they are often seen as homemakers, they are times face stigma in executing their role, especially in the case of a disabled.
The stigma, according to Kavulu is unjust and harmful to mothers.
“In many families, when a mother gives birth to a child with a disability, she is often blamed and accused of being the cause of the misfortune. This blame leads to broken families,” she said.
Kavuli spoke at Sparkling Haven Children’s Home in Langas, Eldoret during a visit by Uasin Gishu Journalists to mark World Press Freedom Day.

The journalists donated food and non-food items to the home and also interacted with them.
The home hosts children with autism.
“We want to call on all fathers to join mothers in this difficult journey. When we love and accept our children with disabilities, we build a community that embraces everyone, regardless of their abilities,” she said
