The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet has flagged off 15 tonnes of iron rich nyota bean seeds.
The seeds will be distributed to farmers in Keiyo South, Marakwet West and Keiyo North subcounties under the REACTS-IN program which aims to combat severe malnutrition and improve maternal and child health.
Last month, 2.5 tonnes of the iron rich bean seeds were distributed to farmers in Marakwet East.

The seeds will be distributed to 7,500 households, targeting the vulnerable, who include persons living with disabilities, expectant mothers and the elderly.
Each household will be given 2kgs of seeds, which can produce between 40 to 60 kgs of beans. The beans matures between 70 days.
Governor Wisely Rotich while presiding over the distribution said the model, besides nutrition, will also act as a catalyst to his “Wealth Creation Strategy” where the farmers could earn income through the sale of the produce.

The team from REACTS-IN was led by Penina Muoki, Program Manager, HarvestPlus, and Thomas Kwambai, KALRO.
Present were Agriculture CECM Edwin Kibor, CDA James Wekesa and CO Lorna Kipsang among other county staff.
