FLLoCA Projects: Olwenge-Oasis Estate Drainage Improvements Now At 90% into Completion

Uasin Gishu County Government, through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA), is in the final stages of completing a major drainage improvement project at Olwenge-Oasis Estate, located in Racecourse Ward, Kesses Sub-County.

The project undertaken here aims to alleviate the perennial flooding problems faced by residents in the area. It is set to transform the estate and provide long-term solutions to water management challenges.

According to project Engineer Alex Mutai, the project, which is 90% complete,  involves the construction of an advanced drainage system designed to manage stormwater runoff effectively, reducing the risk of flooding during the rainy season.

The improved infrastructure is expected to enhance the overall living conditions of residents, offering both environmental and economic benefits by preventing waterlogging, which has long disrupted daily activities in the estate.

The County Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr Jonathan Bii Chelilim, in partnership with the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program, has allocated significant resources to ensure that the drainage improvements meet modern standards.

The project also aligns with the county’s broader manifesto under Nguzo no. 7 of addressing climate change impacts at the local level by enhancing resilience to extreme weather events and flooding.

Benefits of improved Olwenge-Oasis Estate drainage system

Climate change Unit Officer in charge of Kesses Sub-County Ms. Anne Chepkoech, while on site visit, noted that the completion of this drainage system is expected to have far-reaching benefits beyond just preventing flooding.

It will promote better road conditions, reduce soil erosion, and create a healthier environment for the residents. Local businesses, which often suffer disruptions during the rainy season, are also set to benefit from improved infrastructure that ensures smoother operations.

Residents of Oasis have expressed optimism about the project’s completion, acknowledging the efforts of the county government and the FLLoCA program in addressing the needs of the community.

The drainage improvements are not only seen as a necessity but also as a step toward making Uasin Gishu County a more sustainable and climate-resilient county.
