The City of Eldoret has officially inaugurated its first board, raising high expectations to steer the newly conferred city toward economic growth and sustainable development.
Members of the board took the oath of office on Thursday, February 12, 2026, marking a significant milestone for Uasin Gishu County.
The team is now tasked with formulating and implementing policies aimed at positioning Eldoret as a leading economic hub in Kenya.
What are responsibilities of city board in Kenya
Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii said the city board carries the responsibility of ensuring Eldoret sets the pace in development despite its recent elevation to city status.
“We are a new city, yes, but we are champions. The board must move swiftly to introduce sound policies that will make Eldoret excel in all sectors,” said Dr. Bii.

The Governor noted that his administration has already laid a strong foundation through infrastructure upgrades and improved urban planning.
He cited a Ksh 1 billion investment, in partnership with the national government, to upgrade key link roads within the city.
He also highlighted the ultra-modern market as a major economic boost.
Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea urged the pioneer board to work closely with the county government to develop strategies to attract investors and spur economic growth.

County Assembly Housing and Urban Development Committee Chair and Racecourse MCA Amos Kiptanui congratulated the board, expressing confidence in its ability to guide the city’s development.
Minority Leader Francis Muya described the board as a product of a rigorous vetting process, saying members were selected based on merit and experience.
MCAs Rebecca Jepchirchir (Kuinet/Kapsuswa) and Moses Kebenei (Kapseret/Simat), who also sit on the Housing and Urban Development Committee, echoed similar sentiments.
