Construction works for the first-ever modern chicken slaughterhouse in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu county is nearing completion.
Works on the project started barely six months ago, but it is now at 90 per cent complete.
The project is being undertaken by the County Government of Uasin Gishu.
According to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim, several pieces of processing equipment have already been installed.
Some of the equipment installed in the modern chicken slaughterhouse includes automated slaughter and defeathering lines as well as chilling and cold-storage units.
“The modern chicken slaughterhouse in Kichinjio, launched six months ago, is now 90 per cent complete, an important step forward in delivering our county’s development priorities,” Chelilim said on Friday, January 16, 2026.
“Key processing equipment has already been installed, including automated slaughter and defeathering lines, hygienic evisceration systems, and cold-chain infrastructure such as chilling and cold-storage units. These installations ensure the facility meets required health and safety standards and is ready for efficient, high-capacity operations once commissioning is complete,” he added.
Once complete, the Eldoret chicken slaughterhouse will not only enhance food safety standards but also open up Eldoret for a larger market.

The slaughterhouse will have the capacity to process over 500 chickens per hour.
“Once operational, it will process over 500 chickens per hour, create employment opportunities for our youth, enhance food safety standards, and position our county to compete effectively in larger markets,” the governor said.
The project, Governor Chelilim said, is also in fulfilment of his Nguzo Kumi manifesto, which promised to establish an accredited, state-of-the-art chicken abattoir.
“Today, that promise stands realised and is a significant milestone in our commitment to modernising agriculture and creating opportunities for all,” he noted.
