Kenya Deepens Primary Health Care Reforms

Kenya is building on major gains in community health to further strengthen primary health care through the Primary Health Care Optimization Initiative.

The initiative is led by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Amref Health Africa in Kenya and other partners.

So far, 8.8 million households have been registered on the electronic Community Health Information System, enabling millions of Kenyans to be screened for diabetes, hypertension, maternal, and child health conditions.

In addition, 228 Primary Care Networks have been established across all 47 counties.

Speaking during a working session with stakeholders, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, said the initiative is designed to shift Kenya’s health system “from dependency to sustainability,” anchored on the Social Health Authority Act, Primary Health Care Act, Facility Improvement Financing Act, and Digital Health Act.

By 2028, she noted, Kenya envisions a prevention-first, people-centred, and financially sustainable health system, with communities actively engaged as partners in their own health.
