Moi University has confirmed that a bus carrying 50 students from the School of Arts and Social Sciences was involved in a tragic road accident along the Kisumu-Bondo Road, near the Namba-Kapiyo area.
The university, in a statement on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, said the he bus was on an academic trip when it was involved in a multi-vehicle collision involving a Toyota Noah and a Toyota Fortuner.
According to initial police reports, the accident occurred when the Toyota Noah, being driven from the opposite direction, lost control and veered into the lane of the University bus.
“We confirm that Fifteen (15) students sustained injuries in the accident. Of these, Three (3) who required specialized care were referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, while the remaining Twelve (12) with minor injuries received treatment at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital,” the university said.

It further pointed out that all injured students are in stable condition and receiving full medical attention.
“Moi University is closely monitoring their recovery and remains in active communication with their families,” the institution said.
Two lecturers, who were accompanying the students on the academic trip also sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital.
Following the accident, Moi University said it had activated all necessary support mechanisms, including counselling services, transport arrangements and accommodation assistance, to ensure the affected receive comprehensive care and support.
It also extended heartfelt gratitude to the local community and Good Samaritans who came to the aid of their students and staff at the scene.
“Their swift action, care and compassion were instrumental in ensuring timely assistance and medical intervention. We also sincerely thank the emergency responders, medical teams and officials from the Siaya and Kisumu County Governments for their swift assistance,” the university said.
Tragically, the driver of the Toyota Noah, lost his life in the accident.
