West Pokot County has officially opened an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Kapenguria, marking a major milestone in efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and coordination in the region.
The commissioning was led by Governor Simon Kachapin and graced by Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General, Dr. Ahmed Idris, who assured the county of the organization’s continued support.
“This is our commitment to respond on time and support our people in times of emergencies. We are committing to walk the journey with you,” Dr. Idris said.

Governor Kachapin also described the new facility as a turning point in how West Pokot responds to disasters.
“The operationalization of the Emergency Operations Center we inaugurate today gives life to this vision. This facility will serve as a central hub where multidisciplinary teams can work together, monitor risks, and mount timely responses to disasters. It is a symbol of our county’s determination to move from reactive crisis management to proactive resilience building,” he said.
The facility will be managed by the County Disaster Risk Management Unit in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society.
It is equipped to handle early warning information, coordinate emergency responses, and also facilitate collaboration across multiple agencies.

Leaders present at the event included MCAs Richard Ruto, Elijah Kaseuseu, Shariff Kiptalam, and Paul Cheling’a, as well as North Rift Regional Chairman Francis Soprin.
Kenya Red Cross West Pokot Vice Chair, Francis Soprin was also present among other officials.
