AK World U20 Trials: Emmanuel Kiprono, ‎Cynthia Chepkurui Hit Top Gear on Opening Day

World Under-20 Cross Country silver medallist Emmanuel Kiprono and Africa U18 3,000m champion Cynthia Chepkurui stamped their authority on Day One of the Athletics Kenya World U20 Championship Trials on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Nyayo National Stadium.

The event produced commanding displays to strengthen their bids for global glory. ‎The World U20 Championships are scheduled for August 2 to August 9 in Eugene, Oregon in the USA.

‎Under the selection rules, the winner in each event earns automatic qualification, while a panel of judges determines the second athlete.

‎Kiprono produced a clinical run in the men’s 3,000m, surging to victory in 7:35.4, comfortably inside the 8:04.00 entry standard for Eugene.

‎Elkanah Sanutia also dipped under the qualifying mark after clocking 7:59.6, with Enock Tuitoek placing third in 8:01.0.

‎Kiprono will be making his second global appearance in team Kenya colours after having donned the national singlet at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, earlier this year.

‎The youngster clocked 23:20 in Tallahassee to secure silver in an all-Kenyan podium sweep, behind champion Frankline Kibet (23:18) and ahead of bronze medallist Andrew Alamisi (23:28).

‎Kiprono attributed his dominant showing at Nyayo to solid preparations.

‎”I had trained very well for this race. At the finish line, I felt my body was in good shape.”

‎After sizing up the pace in the opening laps, the St Francis Kimuron student decided to take matters into his own hands.

‎”I saw the group was not moving fast so I decided to push the field,” he said.

‎Despite his World Cross Country silver medal, Kiprono believes he still has unfinished business on the world stage.

‎”I got silver at the World Cross Country and I knew I had a lot more in the tank, but I was still not satisfied.”

‎Kiprono, coached by Boniface Limo, now has one clear target in mind.

I want to go to America and come back with gold so that my Kenyan fans can be happy.

Who won girl’s 5,000m at AK World U20 trials?

‎In the girls’ 5,000m, Chepkurui also delivered a statement performance, storming to victory in 15:24.4 to secure her ticket to Eugene.

‎Her winning time comfortably cleared the 16:25.0 entry standard.

‎African U20 3,000m bronze medallist Joyline Chepkemoi settled for second place in 15:37.8.

‎Chepkurui was delighted after opening her campaign in style.

‎”I am thankful I was able to finish the race in first position,” she said.

‎The youngster revealed that her gold medal triumph at last year’s African championships has fueled her growing confidence and ambition.

‎”I won gold in Africa and that really motivated me and gave me morale.”

‎At the 2025 African U20 and U18 Championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria, Chepkurui clocked 9:26.35 to clinch the 3,000m title.

‎With Eugene fast approaching, her focus now shifts to sharpening her speed as she chases global glory.

‎”When I go back to camp, I want to focus on my speed so that I can come back with a gold medal,” she said.

‎Meanwhile, Chepkemoi acknowledged the girls’ race was fiercely contested but expressed satisfaction at finishing inside the top two.

‎”The race was tough but I pushed myself. This is my last U20, so I am thankful to have finished in the top two.

‎Chepkemoi is now eyeing a dream farewell to the junior ranks.

‎”I hope to go to Eugene and come back with gold so that I can finish my U20 journey in a good way.”

‎The African U20 3,000m bronze medallist also credited world 5,000m and 10,000m record holder Beatrice Chebet for playing a key role in her development.

‎”I thank my mentor Beatrice Chebet, for supporting and motivating me in my athletics journey.”

‎”She has been advising me before my transition to seniors. She tells me that I need to put more effort into my senior career.”
