Eldoret Jamia Leadership under Fire for Allegedly Sidelining Muslim Leaders from Other Areas

A section of Mulism leaders in Turbo sub-county are up in arms after they were allegedly denied an opportunity to speak during an iftar dinner organised by President William Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet.

Farouk hosted Muslims from the Turbo constituency for dinner at his Chepsaita home on the night of Monday, February 23, 2026.

Some Muslim leaders, however, lamented that they were not given an opportunity to speak at the event.

According to Jamal Diriwo Omari, one of the muslim leaders, only leaders from Jamia Mosque dominated the event, yet it was for the whole constituency.

We were not given an opportunity to speak, and the discrimination that played out in public is unacceptable. When we attend such an event, we must have a representation from everyone because in this case, individuals from Mailli Nne dominated,” Omari told Uasin Gishu News.

As Muslims in Turbo and Uasin Gishu, we must have good order when meeting our politicians. What was witnessed is the kind of leadership that divides Muslims, not unites them,” he added.

Omari, however, thanked Farouk for hosting them for the Iftar dinner.

What Farouk Kibet promised Turbo Muslims

During the dinner, Kibet promised to support several Muslim projects in Eldoret town, among them the construction of the Maili Nne mosque and Waqfu Plaza.

He also pledged to help construct a new mosque in Turbo. He noted that the current mosque is too old, asking muslims in the area to look for a plot where the new project will be constructed with his support.

Farouk also promised to ensure the Maili Nne mosque is completed and work with Muslims to ensure the Waqfu Plaza is completed. Kibet also promised to champion rights for Muslim women to wear hijabs in school,” added Ustadh Uthman Mwanza, Imam of Baharini Jamia, who also condemned discrimination witnessed during the Iftar.

For the Jua Kali Mosque, Farouk promised to drill a borehole to ensure it has sufficient water. This is after the mosque’s leadership, led by Musa Kiptum, requested support. Kitum noted that for years, they have asked other leaders in the county to support the project but it has all been in vain.

MCAs from all the Turbo constituency wards were also present.

Turbo Muslims endorse Farouk Kibet for MP

The Muslim leaders present also endorsed Farouk Kibet to vie for the Turbo MP seat in the 2027 General Election.

We endorsed him to be our next Turbo MP because he has a good vision for Muslims and is ready to work with all of us and address issues we’re facing,” Omari said.

He said if the elders want him to be MP, he cannot go against their wishes,” he added.

Farouk is said to be eying the MP seat currently being held by Janet Rotich.
