A General Service Unit (GSU) officer accused of shooting dead a woman within the Eldoret State Lodge compound will remain in police custody for the next 21 days.
This is after an Eldoret Court granted the prosecution more time to detain the officer to allow them to conclude investigations into the murder of Doris Murei.
The officer, Nathan Kirwa, who is attached to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim’s security detail, was presented in court a day after he was arrested at Kaptinga area along the Kapseret-Maili Tisa by-pass.
The prosecution filed an application to continue holding the GSU officer, arguing that they had not yet recorded statements from key witnesses and that exhibits recovered from the scene, including a gun allegedly used to commit the crime and spent cartridges, had not been forwarded for ballistic analysis.
“We have not yet recorded statements from critical witnesses; postmortem on the deceased has not yet been done, and exhibits recovered at the scene and from the respondent, which include a pistol, magazine, spent cartridges and ammunition, have yet to be forwarded for ballistics. The file also has to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for perusal and approval of charges,” investigating officer Edwin Chirchir told the court.

Eldoret Chief Magistrate Peter Ndigwa ordered the officer to be detained at Naiberi Police Station, arguing that evidence produced before the court shows the accused was a flight risk.
“After considering the application dated September 1, 2026, it is clear that there are compelling reasons to limit the accused person’s right to liberty and deny him bond. The respondent has demonstrated that he is not only a flight risk but also a danger to the public,” the court noted.
“He is also yet to undergo any mental assessment. Based on those reasons, we find the application merited and allow the same as prayed,” it added.
The matter will be mentioned on September 23.
Kirwa is alleged to have shot dead the 45-year-old woman at a GSU mess within the Eldoret State Lodge. Police suspect the two had a past relationship and have linked the incident to revenge.
