Elgeyo Marakwet County Partners with Fresh Crop Agency to Produce Certified Potato Seeds

The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet has partnered with Fresh Crop Agency to produce certified potato seeds from the county.

According to Governor Wisley Rotich, the partnership will also facilitate training of farmers while carrying out field days and offtake of potatoes.

The partner, the Governor said, has since started with 400 acre farm in Chepkorio with the first 10,000 bags of seeds expected to be ready in July.

Consequently, Elgeyo Marakwet farmers will now buy certified seeds from chepkorio Keiyo south beginning July, said the County boss.

Speaking in Kabiemit on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, while on inspection of development projects, Rotich said the partner had promised to increase seed acreage to 3000.

The county boss also had an opportunity to interact with the residents as he inspected and commissioned some projects.

Some of the projects Elgeyo Marakwet county is implementing that the county boss visited while in Kabiemit include the Chepketeret water project, which will serve Chepketeret Primary and Secondary schools and area residents and the Cheboen ECD centre, where young pupils are taking digital learning, a programme that equips them with essential skills for the future.

I was encouraged on how the little pupils were taking their digital lessons,” the governor said.

Rotich also opened the new outpatient department at Kapkitony Dispensary, which will see the previous facility converted into a maternity wing.

In addition, he inspected Kapkitony farmers cooperative society cooler and the solarisation of Kapkitony borehole as well as the Mambai ECD, where pupils now have new classrooms, free from dust and colds that had exposed them to consistent flu and other diseases.

He also commissioned the Kabiemit Vocational Training Centre, Tambul, the first vocational institute in the Ward.

The centre has a record 145 students in its first intake, which is an encouraging move. Those interested in hairdressing, masonry, plumbing, garment making, electrical, and mechanical courses are encouraged to apply.

Further, Governor Rotich handed over a new grader at HZ centre. He said the new grader will reduce the cost of construction and repair of roads in the ward.

Money saved will be used in other development projects and programs,” he said.
