Ferdinand Omanyala Runs 9.98 to Finish Second in Shanghai

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala extended his red-hot start to the 2026 season with yet another electric performance on Saturday, May 16, 2026, clocking his fourth sub-10 seconds run of the year at the Shanghai Diamond League.

‎Omanyala scorched to a 9.98 second place finish, trailing South Africa’s Gift Leotlela, who edged the field in 9.97.

‎American sprint star Kenneth Bednarek completed the podium after also timing 9.98.

Omanyala, was pleased with clocking yet another sub-10 over the 100m in Shanghai.

I had expectation to run under 10 and I acheived that, I hope to keep the performance consistent in the next race in Xiamen,” Omanyala said after the race.

‎The 30-year-old Kenyan has looked razor sharp since opening his 2026 campaign.

‎Omanyala began his outdoor season at the Cape Milers Continental Tour in South Africa, where he sprinted to victory in 10.19.

‎That race saw him comfortably dispatch South African duo Ubay Arend, who clocked 10.55 for second place, and Keegan Van Der Merwe, who sealed third in 10.56.

‎The Kenyan speed merchant then shifted into top gear, launching an emphatic run of sub-10 performances over the 100m.

‎He fired the first warning shot at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix on April 18, storming to victory in 9.98, his first sub-10 second performance in more than two years.

‎Christopher Borzor finished second in 10.16, while Italy’s Chituru Ali rounded off the podium in 10.26.

‎Omanyala then returned home for the Kip Keino Classic on April 24, where he thrilled the home crowd at Nyayo National Stadium by lowering his season’s best to 9.96 en route to victory.

‎South Africa’s Rivaldo Roberts placed second in 10.12, while Canadian veteran Aaron Brown finished third in 10.15.

‎The 2022 Commonwealth champion lowered his season best mark even further two days later at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, blazing to 9.95 to finish third in another high-quality sprint showdown.

‎Canada’s Jerome Blake claimed top honours in 9.93, while compatriot Andre De Grasse took second in an identical 9.95 to Omanyala.

Is Omanyala part of Kenya’s men’s 4x100m relay team?

‎Beyond his individual exploits, Omanyala also played a key role in Kenya’s men’s 4x100m relay team at the World Relay Championships in Gaborone, Botswana, on May 3, 2026.

‎Running alongside Meshack Babu, Mark Otieno and Ronald Koech, the Kenyan quartet powered to a national record of 38.50 seconds to finish fifth in Heat Two of the 2027 World Championships qualifying rounds.
