Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program Making Notable Strides in Uasin Gishu

Uasin Gishu County is making significant progress in implementing the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA), an initiative designed to empower local communities by providing solutions through climate action investments.

The program aims to build resilience against climate change by funding projects focusing on climate adaptation and mitigation at the grassroots level.

On November 27, 2024, the National Coordinator of FLLoCA, Peter Odengo, addressed the County Climate Unit, which Chief Officer Mary Kerich leads.

Odengo highlighted Uasin Gishu’s preparedness and the county’s alignment with the program’s objectives.

He also commended the local teams for meeting the requirements outlined by the funders and emphasized the county’s potential to greatly benefit from the program.

Uasin Gishu team has demonstrated its potential to handle projects that provide solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation. Going forward, ensure that all conditions required are met. We also urge that all projects identified be locally driven by the wananchi since these projects are their own. It’s only by doing such investments that we build a more resilient and sustainable future for our people,” said Odengo.

Chief Officer Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Mary Kerich echoed Odengo’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of strong collaboration among the communities, the county government, the national government, and development partners such as the World Bank.

How many FLLoCA program projects are in Uasin Gishu?

She noted that the implementation of the FLLoCA projects was already underway, with 20 projects having commenced, demonstrating the county’s commitment to tackling climate change.

We have an efficient team to ensure that implementation, supervision,  monitoring and evaluation of the projects is done so that value for money in the investments will be realized. We have ensured that the impacts of the projects reach all sectors of society, including women, youth, men, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities within Uasin Gishu. It is also important to note that all our projects are being implemented on public land,” Kerich said.

The collaboration between the National Climate Coordination Unit and the County Climate Unit has facilitated the effective rollout of the FLLoCA program.

By ensuring that the projects reflect local needs and actively involve community members, the program is contributing to building climate resilience in Uasin Gishu County.

The continued focus on inclusive and sustainable development under FLLoCA further promises to create lasting impacts on the county’s climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, benefiting a wide range of people in Uasin Gishu and setting a strong example for other counties across the country.
