Kenya in Talks with US on Ebola Preparedness, Says Health CS Aden Duale

Kenya is holding ongoing discussions with the US government and other global partners on strengthening preparedness and response for Ebola and other emerging health threats, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has said.

In a press statement issued Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Duale confirmed that the talks focus on collaboration to bolster national and regional capacity to handle infectious disease outbreaks.

The Government of Kenya notes ongoing discussions with US government and other global partners regarding international collaboration on strengthening preparedness and response mechanisms for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and other emerging public health threats,” he said.

The CS stressed that any cooperation would be subject to Kenya’s legal and public health standards, with the protection of citizens and health workers as the priority.

Any arrangements regarding international health cooperation will be guided by Kenya’s national laws, public health regulations, biosafety and biosecurity standards, and the overriding responsibility of Government to safeguard the health and welfare of the people of Kenya. Protection of Kenyan citizens, frontline health workers and communities remains paramount,” Duale stated.

How many Ebola cases have been reported in Kenya?

He said Kenya has already activated its national Incident Management System, intensified surveillance at points of entry, and designated laboratories for testing. More than 55,000 travellers have been screened and 10 suspected cases tested, with all results negative.

Duale linked the current talks to Kenya’s experience in past regional outbreaks, noting that partnerships with the US and others have previously supported investments in surveillance, workforce training, and emergency preparedness.

As we continue to strengthen preparedness and resilience, our approach will remain guided by science, collaboration, national interest and the shared objective of protecting populations from emerging public health threats,” he said.

Kenya is ready. Kenya is capable and Kenya will continue to act responsibly in safeguarding both national and global health security. We shall be giving regular updates on a timely basis,” he added.

The Ministry said it welcomes partnerships that “strengthen global health security and reaffirm our shared commitment to protecting lives through coordinated, science-based action.”
