At first, a sample of comments from the subreddits of the Bundesliga clubs was collected, tracking the period between August 2025 and August 2026, and it was subsequently analysed how many of their comments included swear words in either English or German.
According to the results of the analysis, the top five most foul-mouthed fandoms were:
- Borussia Dortmund – 14.01% of comments included swear words
- Bayern Munich – 9.89% of comments included swear words
- RB Leipzig – 8.97% of comments included swear words
- FC Köln – 8.80% of comments included swear words
- Borussia Mönchengladbach – 7.91% of comments included swear words.
The Most Negative Bundesliga Fandoms
Every comment collected was also run through a sentiment analysis tool, which classified it as positive, negative or neutral, allowing each fandom to be ranked by the share of its comments that fell into each category.
The top five most negative Bundesliga fandoms were:
- Werder Bremen – 54.56% of comments carried a negative tone
- Bayern Munich – 54.08% of comments carried a negative tone
- Borussia Dortmund – 52.72% of comments carried a negative tone
- RB Leipzig – 47.44% of comments carried a negative tone
- FC Köln – 47.01% of comments carried a negative tone.
The Most Positive Bundesliga Fandoms
On the positive side of the same sentiment analysis, the top five most positive Bundesliga fandoms were:
- SC Paderborn – 38.03% of comments carried a positive tone
- Bayer Leverkusen – 37.07% of comments carried a positive tone
- Union Berlin – 33.64% of comments carried a positive tone
- SC Freiburg – 33.28% of comments carried a positive tone
- Borussia Mönchengladbach – 31.87% of comments carried a positive tone.
The Most Polite Bundesliga Fandoms
On the other end of the profanity scale, the top five most polite Bundesliga fandoms were:
- SC Paderborn – 2.46% of comments included swear words
- FC Augsburg – 2.81% of comments included swear words
- Hamburger SV – 4.51% of comments included swear words
- SC Freiburg – 4.66% of comments included swear words
- Eintracht Frankfurt – 5.95% of comments included swear words.
“An analysis of over 130,000 fan comments from the subreddits of the Bundesliga clubs, screened for both English and German-language swear words, found Borussia Dortmund to be the most foul-mouthed Bundesliga fandom with 14.01% of their comments containing swear words, while Werder Bremen came out as the most negative fandom, with 54.56% of their comments carrying a negative tone,” Wettfreunde.net spokesperson said.
“On the opposite end, SC Paderborn were found to be both the most positive fandom, with 38.03% of their comments carrying a positive tone, and the most polite fandom, with only 2.46% of their comments containing swear words,” the spokesperson added.
