After the start of the 2026/27 La Liga season, Wettbasis.com has analysed over 270,000 comments from the subreddits of La Liga clubs to find out which fandoms are the most polite and, conversely, which fandoms are the most foul-mouthed, searching for profanities in both English and Spanish.
Additionally, the analysis also uncovered which fandoms are the most positive and which fans are the most negative.
“An analysis of over 270,000 fan comments from the subreddits of La Liga clubs found Athletic Bilbao to Most Foul-Mouthed and Negative La Liga Fandomsbe the most foul-mouthed and the most negative La Liga fandom, with 17.17% of their comments containing swear words and 54.56% carrying a negative tone. On the opposite end, Real Betis were found to be the most positive fandom, with 36.82% of their comments carrying a positive tone, and Celta Vigo came out as the most polite fandom, with only 2.44% of their comments containing swear words,” a Wettbasis.com spokesperson said.
5 Most Foul-Mouthed La Liga Fandoms
At first, a sample of comments from the subreddits of the La Liga clubs was collected, tracking the period between August 2025 and September 2026, and it was subsequently analysed how many of the fan comments included swear words.
According to the results of the analysis, the top five most foul-mouthed fandoms were:
- Athletic Bilbao– 17% of comments included swear words
- Atlético Madrid– 17% of comments included swear words
- Real Madrid– 40% of comments included swear words
- Barcelona– 99% of comments included swear words
- Rayo Vallecano– 10% of comments included swear words
The Most Negative La Liga Fandoms
Every comment collected was also run through a sentiment analysis tool, which classified it as positive, negative or neutral, allowing each fandom to be ranked by the share of its comments that fell into each category.
The top five most negative La Liga fandoms were:
- Athletic Bilbao– 56% of comments carried a negative tone
- Real Madrid– 60% of comments carried a negative tone
- Barcelona– 11% of comments carried a negative tone
- Atlético Madrid– 62% of comments carried a negative tone
- Rayo Vallecano– 02% of comments carried a negative tone
Which are the 5 most positive La Liga fandoms?
On the positive side of the same sentiment analysis, the top five most positive La Liga fandoms were:
- Real Betis– 82% of comments carried a positive tone
- Celta Vigo– 76% of comments carried a positive tone
- Espanyol– 15% of comments carried a positive tone
- Valencia– 06% of comments carried a positive tone
- Deportivo La Coruña– 61% of comments carried a positive tone
5 most polite La Liga fandoms
On the other end of the profanity scale, the top five most polite La Liga fandoms with the least amount of swear words used were:
- Celta Vigo– 44% of comments included swear words
- Valencia– 94% of comments included swear words
- Espanyol– 29% of comments included swear words
- Deportivo La Coruña– 64% of comments included swear words
- Real Betis– 66% of comments included swear words
The data analysed was collected between August 2025 and September 2026, while the final analysis was carried out in September 2026.
A minimum of 100 comments per subreddit was required for a club to be included in the analysis. Alavés, Racing Santander and Real Sociedad do not have an active club subreddit and were therefore excluded. Elche, Getafe, Levante, Málaga, Osasuna and Villarreal do have club subreddits, but none of them met the minimum comment threshold and was also excluded from the analysis.
In total, 272,975 comments from the subreddits of 11 La Liga clubs were analysed, looking for comments that contained swear words. Each club was assigned a percentage value based on the % of the comments on their subreddit that contained swear words.
Additionally, the emotional tone of each comment was assessed and categorised as either negative, positive or neutral.
