The County Government of Uasin Gishu has received a major boost in its solid waste management after its American sister city, Minneapolis, donated a garbage truck.
The packer truck was formally handed over by Minneapolis Director of Public Works Tim Sexton and is now ready for shipment to Kenya.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim disclosed the development in a Facebook post on the night of Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
Bii said the donation was not an isolated gesture but a practical outcome of last year’s engagements marking 25 years of the sister-city partnership.
“This is a direct outcome of the engagements we held last year during the 25th anniversary of our sister-city relationship, where we discussed how to strengthen Eldoret’s solid waste management,” the county boss said.
The governor said the new equipment will expand the city’s capacity to keep Eldoret clean as it settles into its new city status.
“The arrival of this truck will strengthen our waste collection capacity and complement the work we are undertaking to improve the overall outlook of our City of Champions,” he said.
Eldoret-Minneapolis 25 years of partnership
Eldoret and Minneapolis have been sister cities since 2000, a relationship that has won international recognition.
Between 2009 and 2011, the City of Minneapolis donated firefighting equipment and a used fire truck to Eldoret, facilitated the donation of an ambulance and medical supplies through Allina Medical Transportation, and partnered with the International Leadership Institute to train Eldoret locals on firefighting, first aid and emergency response.
The program won the Sister Cities International 2011 Innovation: Humanitarian Assistance Award.
Eldoret-Minneapolis partnership was established in 2000 after a proposal by the International Leadership Institute and a Kenyan citizen.
The latest garbage truck donation comes just a day after Governor Bii held fresh talks in Minneapolis with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board led by Superintendent Al Bangoura on September 22, 2026, to explore new collaborations in sports, recreation and public spaces.
The governor appreciated the continued support.
“We appreciate the City of Minneapolis for standing with Eldoret as we continue on the path of building a modern, clean and sustainable city,” Bii said.
