An Eldoret court has ordered General Service Unit (GSU) officer Nathan Kirwa to undergo a mental assessment before taking a plea in a murder case linked to the fatal shooting of nurse Dorris Murei.
Kirwa, who was attached to the security detail of Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, is accused of killing the 45-year-old nurse on August 30, 2026, near Eldoret State Lodge. Murei worked at Uasin Gishu County Referral Hospital and was popularly known as Dori.
In a ruling, Eldoret Deputy High Court Registrar Daniel Sitati directed prison officers to escort Kirwa to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for the assessment.
The court also ordered his transfer from Eldoret Central Police Station to Eldoret GK Remand Prison pending the assessment and his arraignment before the High Court.
Sitati further directed that Kirwa be provided with state-funded legal representation. The case will be mentioned on October 1, 2026, to confirm compliance with the court’s orders.
Kirwa was arrested after a six-hour police manhunt following the shooting.
According to police, the officer allegedly approached Murei at a bar and opened fire using a concealed firearm. Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani said Kirwa allegedly shot her five times, killing her on the spot.
Murei was later buried at her husband’s home in Chemalingot, Tiaty Sub-county, Baringo County.
