The Government is investing in modern sports infrastructure to prepare Kenya for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to the office of the government spokesperson, the upgrades will deliver world-class match and training venues while creating lasting benefits for sports development nationwide.
Afraha Stadium in Nakuru is among the sports facilities undergoing a major modernization programme being implemented by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

The project will transform the iconic facility into a modern stadium that meets international standards.
Key upgrades include expanding capacity from 8,200 to 13,000–15,000 seats in the intermediate phases, with a long-term target of 20,000 seats, alongside modern pavilions, floodlights, an all-weather Tartan track, an upgraded pitch, parking and improved sanitation.
Once complete, the modernized Afraha Stadium will strengthen Nakuru’s position as a regional sports hub, support talent development, boost sports tourism and drive economic growth while reinforcing Kenya’s readiness to successfully host AFCON 2027.
Similar projects are ongoing in 30 other stadiums including two in Uasin Gishu County –Kipchoge Keino and 64 stadiums.
Kipchoge Keino Stadium has been identified as an alternative venue for the 2027 AFCON.
The County Government of Uasin Gishu recently handed over the 64 Stadium site to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Works on the two stadiums in Uasin Gishu are expected to be complete by December 12, 2026.
