The renovation of Kipchoge Stadium in Uasin Gishu County is 56.2 per cent complete, with substantial completion targeted for the end of next month, Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru has said.
Mariru made the announcement during an inspection tour on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The Ministry of Defence is supervising the works.
“The project is currently 56.2 per cent complete, with works progressing well and substantial completion expected by the end of next month,” Mariru said.
He noted the stadium’s dual role in upcoming national events. Uasin Gishu County will host part of the facilities supporting this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, which will be co-hosted by Elgeyo-Marakwet and Nandi counties.
“The timely completion of Kipchoge Stadium will therefore be critical in ensuring that the required facilities are ready to support the national celebrations,” he said.
Beyond the October celebrations, the stadium has also been designated as one of the official training venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Kenya will co-host the continental tournament with Tanzania and Uganda.
Additionally, the PS said the government remains committed to delivering projects on schedule and to standard.
“We remain focused on ensuring that development projects are implemented on time, to the required standards and in line with the development agenda of President William Samoei Ruto administration,” he said.
Once complete, the upgraded Kipchoge Stadium is expected to boost sports infrastructure in the North Rift and provide a modern facility for both national events and international teams ahead of AFCON 2027.
