The National Police Service has launched investigations into a chaotic incident that disrupted a church service in the Mwiki area of Kasarani Sub-County on Sunday, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other politicians were in attendance.
“Investigations have been launched to uncover the root cause and motive behind the disruption,” the police said in a statement released Monday, April 7, 2025.
According to the police, the incident reportedly began when over a hundred motorcycles, each carrying two to three passengers, arrived at the church venue shortly after the former Deputy President’s entourage.
The group allegedly began causing commotion, demanding money from the politicians, and damaging property within the church compound.
“Police at Mwiki Police Station heard gunshots at the church grounds, and were mobilised to repulse the goons, who retreated and normalcy returned,” the statement said.
Officers detained several individuals and recovered ten abandoned motorcycles at the scene.
Who fired in the air during Mwili chaos?
Authorities revealed that the gunshots were not from the police but from VIP security officers and licensed civilian firearm holders attempting to protect the dignitaries.
“So far, it has been established that the gunshots heard at the church were fired by the VIP security personnel and civilian licensed firearm holders in their bid to protect the leaders from the rowdy group,” the police clarified.
The statement further indicated that the church did not notify authorities about the high-profile event, meaning no prior security arrangements had been made.
“The church failed to notify the police of the planned function, which included political leaders, and therefore, no advance security measures were deployed to handle such an eventuality,” it said.
The National Police Service has urged members of the public to maintain peace and order, warning that violent disruptions at public gatherings will not be tolerated.
“It is crucial for individuals to express their concerns through proper channels rather than resorting to disorderly behavior that could lead to grave consequences,” the statement concluded.
Gachagua claimed the goons were hired by the government in what he alleged was an attempt to eliminate him.
