Purity Nekesa: Outstanding Poet, Driver, and Footballer in the National Police Service

Purity Nekesa Muraya is a police officer that many describe as an incredibly brilliant, down-to-earth, and disciplined Corporal of Police (CPL).

She has surmounted barriers to becoming the first female poet in the National Police Service (NPS).

Aside from being a poet, Purity Nekesa is also an enthusiastic footballer, an accomplished driver, a mother, and a wife to Corporal Christopher Muraya Macharia.

The Corporal holds a Diploma in Counseling Psychology and Community Development from Zetech University.

She is an alumna of Wiyeta Girls’ Secondary School and Kipsaina Primary School.

Her journey in being a police officer started when she was enlisted in the National Police Service and underwent rigorous recruits training at the famous National Police College Main Campus, formerly known as Kenya Police Training College –Kiganjo.

Later, she graduated as a competent Police Constable.

Corporal Purity Nekesa Muraya was first posted to Malindi Divisional Headquarters and then moved to the Tourist Police Unit in Bamburi, Mombasa. She was later transferred to the National Police Headquarters and is currently deployed at the Directorate of Human Capital Development-Training Department and Sports Office where her exceptional performance of duty and particularly her prowess in sports is appreciated by her supervisors and colleagues.

As a result of her ingenuity and devotion to duty, the indefatigable police officer was promoted from a Constable to the current rank of Corporal and she continues to serve with utmost professionalism, honesty, and integrity.

In pursuit of additional professional knowledge and skills, she has trained extensively, among them undertaking a Data Analysis Course at Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute in Naivasha, Basic Crime Investigation Course at the Police Training Centre in Mombasa, Elementary Driving Course at the Police Driving School, and Defensive Driving Course conducted by the Presidential Escort Unit.

Corporal Purity Muraya discovered her intrinsic poetic rigour and prowess while still in primary school. She excruciatingly nurtured her talent in high school and perfectly exhibited her skills through exemplary performances in events such as weddings, birthdays, and religious events during school holidays,” notes the National Police Service.

The elite poet receives immense support from the National Police Service which has catapulted her to the National and global limelight. She has had the opportunity to perform at high-level police functions and entertain domestic and international guests at various five-star hotels.

Further, she is prominently featured in a song dubbed ‘NPS Anthem’ performed by Mandilly.

The multi-talented officer is also a distinguished footballer having successfully played for the Harambee Starlets in Nigeria and participated in various tournaments in Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Burundi.

In recognition of distinguished and outstanding service rendered to the National Police Service as one among the pioneer group of officers who championed police reforms, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the then Inspector General of the National Police Service Joseph Boinnet.

Also, she was featured in the National Police Service publication dubbed ‘From Force to Service.’

Purity Nekesa Muraya is determined and focused on actively participating in the establishment and guiding the National Police Women Football Team to greater heights.

In addition, she plans to consistently mentor the upcoming poets and encourage the best possible performance at the national and global level to bring honour, glory, and pride to the National Police Service and Kenya.
