It was a memorable Sunday for Kenyan athletics, with standout performances lighting up both London and Eldoret.
In the United Kingdom, London Marathon witnessed a historic feat as Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe surged to a new world record, clocking an astonishing 1:59:30 to etch his name into the record books.
He became the first man to run an official marathon in a time below two hours.

Back home, the Eldoret City Marathon delivered its own thrills, with victorious athletes a lucrative individual prize of KSh 3.5 million in a highly competitive seventh edition.
Moments after their podium finishes, winners in Eldoret turned their attention to London, where their compatriot shortly delivered a historic run, underlining Kenya’s enduring dominance in global distance running.
Eldoret momentarily paused to celebrate its champions, as Koech Cheruiyot and Dorrine Chesang clinched top honours in the men’s and women’s races respectively, capping a day of elite competition in the athletics stronghold.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent and expanding opportunities for young athletes to showcase their abilities.
Race Director Moses Tanui expressed optimism about the marathon’s future, noting increased interest from partners and sponsors, which is expected to elevate upcoming editions of the race.
