Remembering the late Rugby Coach Benjamin Ayimba

Benjamin Ayimba Otieno is the only Kenya Rugby Union Coach who won the World Rugby sevens title for Kenya.

Ayimba took charge of the National sevens team “Shujaa” as the head coach in 2015 and won the Singapore 7s title in 2016.

He was born on the 27th of August 1976 and rose to prominence as a dynamic and skilful rugby player who represented Kenya on the international stage, earning caps for his national team, notably as a back row.

Ayimba enjoyed a stellar playing career in the back row at Impala RFC, the club that he joined in 1995 after completing his studies at Maseno School between 1991 and 1994.

With passionate play and dedication, Benjamin Ayimba eventually captained Impala to two Kenya Cup league and Enterprise Cup doubles in 2000 and 2001.

In 2002, he joined Nondies RFC where he spent three seasons before moving to Cornish Pirates in England in the back row position. Ayimba’s playing career was marked by his exceptional speed, agility, and tactical acumen, making him a key figure in Kenya’s rugby landscape.

Ayimba played a pivotal role in Kenya’s rugby successes during the late 1990s and early 2000s, contributing to memorable victories, and showcasing his leadership on and off the field.

Ayimba’s transition from playing to coaching

Following his retirement from playing, Ayimba transitioned into coaching, where he made an even greater impact on Kenyan rugby.

He served as the head coach of the Kenyan national rugby sevens team, Kenya Shujaa, famously guiding them to their first-ever World Rugby Sevens Series title in 2016 when Kenya won the HSBC Singapore 7s title.

As an outstanding coach, he relied on a philosophy emphasising discipline, teamwork, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Ayimba mentored numerous talented players throughout his coaching career, leaving a lasting legacy on Kenyan rugby.

His passion for the sport and dedication to developing young talent endeared him to fans and players alike.

In January 2021, Benjamin Ayimba was diagnosed with Cerebral Malaria and on May 21st of the same year, he passed away aged 40, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of rugby enthusiasts in Kenya and beyond.

His contributions to the sport will always be remembered, and he will forever be also celebrated as a true legend of Kenyan rugby.
