Safaricom Foundation has set aside Ksh210 million to fund community investments set to benefit over one million Kenyans countrywide.
The fund will be channelled to health, education and economic empowerment projects under the Foundation’s sustainable philanthropy programmes namely Ndoto Zetu, Pamoja, Usamaria, and Regional Engagements.
Ndoto Zetu, which is now entering its sixth phase, is part of the Foundation’s philanthropic partnerships across the country. It aims to support individual Kenyans who are keen to make an impact in their communities through social investments. The Foundation has set aside Ksh100 million towards this initiative, with submissions open from 19th April 2024 to 18th May 2024.
“Looking back at the impact Ndoto Zetu has had so far, it is evident that through collaborations, we can transform lives. Each dream we help fulfill translates to thousands of lives being uplifted, and affirms that Kenyans are very passionate about positively impacting their communities,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.
How much has Safaricom invested in Ndoto Zetu?
Since its inception in 2019, Ndoto Zetu has seen Safaricom Foundation invest Ksh271 million in over 1400 projects, directly improving more than 1.9 million lives across all 47 counties. In Phase 5, the Foundation handed over to the community 299 projects across the country.
“In August last year, we marked our 20th anniversary by starting a year-long celebration of 20 years of transforming lives, a journey that has been made possible through partnerships. Over the years, Ndoto Zetu has become one of our most impactful initiatives, and we are excited to launch another phase, through which we will continue partnering with communities to support projects that are close to them,” said Joseph Ogutu, Chairman, Safaricom Foundation.
As part of its community investments, Safaricom Foundation has also set aside Ksh50 million towards its Pamoja Scheme, which enables Safaricom employees to engage in a community project of their choice, while a further Ksh30 million has been set aside for Usamaria, an initiative through which the Foundation supports patients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by offsetting their medical bills in public hospitals.
Additionally, the Foundation has set aside Ksh30 million towards regional engagements, which provide its regional operations teams across the country a chance to engage the communities they serve through impactful projects.
Since its inception, the Pamoja Scheme has impacted over 1.2 million lives, while Usamaria has supported over 1,000 patients.
