Trans-Nzoia Doctors Issue 7-Day Strike Notice Over Unpaid Salaries, Unimplemented Agreement

Doctors in Trans-Nzoia County could down their tools next week after the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) issued 7-day strike notice to the county government.

In a letter dated July 1, 2026 and hand-delivered to County Secretary Truphosa Amere, KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah said the union will withdraw all doctor services at midnight on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, if demands are not met.

Why Trans Nzoia doctors are threatening to strike?

KMPDU says the notice stems from the county’s failure to implement key provisions of the Return-to-Work Agreement (RTWA) signed on February 13, 2026.

The union references earlier correspondence from February 17, 2026, and argues that “the lapse of considerable time” without action constitutes a breach of commitments by the County Government.

The union has outlined five outstanding grievances affecting its members:

  • Failure to Fully Implement Promotions: Backdated promotions to Nov. 1, 2025, agreed in the RTWA, have not been effected for all eligible doctors.
  • Incomplete Conversion to Permanent Terms: The promised conversion of contract doctors to Permanent and Pensionable [P&P] status remains “partial” despite prior commitments.
  • Delayed Salaries: Doctors continue to face “chronic delays” in salary payments, which KMPDU says is causing financial hardship and disrupting service delivery.
  • Unremitted Statutory Deductions and Union Dues: Delays in remitting SHA contributions, other statutory obligations, and union dues are contrary to statutory requirements.
  • Unpaid SRC Arrears: Nineteen months of SRC-approved arrears remain unpaid, with no clear payment schedule from county leadership.

KMPDU demands to Trans Nzoia County

KMPDU is demanding the county address “all the aforementioned concerns in their entirety” within seven days.

If the County Government fails to meet these demands in totality, all doctors shall withdraw their services and down tools effective midnight on Wednesday, 8th July 2026,” the notice states.

The union says it remains “available for immediate engagement” and hopes to resolve the matter “without disruption of healthcare services to the public.”
