The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced Dr William Samoei Ruto as the winner of the recently concluded General Election.
IEBC National Returning Officer Wafula Chebukati declared Dr Ruto the winner of the presidential race after meeting the minimum threshold for one to be the president.
In announcing him the winner, Chebukati said the UDA presidential candidate garnered 7,176,141 votes to win the hotly contested race, representing 50.49 per cent.
He also attained at least 25 per cent of the votes in 39 counties.
A candidate can win the presidency if he gets 25 per cent in at least 24 counties.
His close competitor Raila Odinga of the Azimio coalition had 6,942,930 representing 48.85 per cent of the over 14 million votes that were cast on August 9.
Speaking after he was handed his certificate, to confirm that he was the President-elect, Dr Ruto, who is also the outgoing Deputy President said it was all because of God that he has emerged victorious.
“Without God, we would not have been here,” said the President-elect.
Azimio headed to Supreme Court
Already the Azimio coalition has disputed the results signalling they were headed to the Supreme Court.
Should they decide to challenge the results, they have 7 days to file their petition, after which the Supreme Court will have 14 days to make a determination.

Earlier, four IEBC commissioners disowned the presidential elections, claiming that the last phase of the process was opaque.
“…some things need to be put out there, as you can see the four of us we are here not at Bomas where the results will be announced because of the opaque nature of how this phase has been handled,” said IEBC vice chairperson Juliana Cherera on behalf of the four commissioners.
Others were Irene Masit, Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang’aya.
