The road to achieving two-thirds gender rule in the country seems to be far from being achieved, this is if the results of the recent general election are anything to go by.

While there was an improvement in the number of women elected to the Governor Seat and Members of Parliament (MP) at the national level, there is more work to be done before such progress can be made at the County Assembly level – especially here in Uasin Gishu.

In the past assembly, there were only two women MCAs – Sarah Malel of Kimumu and Lucy Ng’endo Chomba of Huruma.

The Huruma MCA did not make it back to the assembly, but generally, there was an improvement by one more MCA, as three women were elected out of the 30 wards in Uasin Gishu.

We take a look at the three women MCAs;

Sarah Malel

She will be setting her foot on the Uasin Gishu County Assembly for a second term.

Malel was first elected Kimumu MCA in 2017 on a Jubilee ticket and secured her re-election using the UDA party.

Initially, she was the only elected female MCA, before she was joined by Huruma’s Lucy Chomba, who won a by-election in 2021 after the death of her husband Peter Chomba in 2020.

Rebecca Chepchirchir

The Kuinet/Kapsuswa MCA-elect will be making a comeback to the Uasin Gishu County Assembly after five years in the cold.

She served in the first assembly, between 2013 and 2017, after winning on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. However, Chepchirchir, who was previously a councillor and Mayor in the Eldoret Municipal Council lost in 2017 before winning back the seat on a UDA ticket in the August 9 poll.

Mary Goretti Boroswa

Kipsomba MCA-elect Mary Goretti Boroswa.

She is the MCA-elect for the Kipsomba ward in Soy Constituency.

Mary Boroswa has been serving as a nominated MCA in the Uasin Gishu County Assembly, and following the August 9, 2022, poll, she has upgraded to an elected MCA, after winning the seat on a UDA ticket.

It is a slow but improvement in the women’s performance in the just concluded general election in Uasin Gishu, with one more woman elected to be a Member of Parliament in the county.

Turbo MP Janet Sitienei won re-election while Prof. Phyllis Bartoo also won the Moiben MP seat.

This means of the possible 39 elective positions in Uasin Gishu, that is, Governor, Senator, County Woman MP, six MPs and 30 MCAs, only 6 women leaders were elected.
