The Athletics Kenya Masters Team continued their strong medal harvest at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea, with Sylvia Chesebe, Betty Chebet and Grace Kidake adding more medals to Kenya’s tally.
As the global showpiece gathers momentum through its opening week, which runs from August 22 to September 3, Kenya’s veteran athletes are living up to the lofty expectations set during the national selection trials held in May, delivering commanding performances across the track, road and field.
On Monday, August 24, 2026, Sylvia Chesebe secured Kenya’s third gold medal in the championships after surging to victory in the W35 800m. Meanwhile, Grace Kidake added to Kenya’s impressive start by securing silver in the W40 800m.
In the field, Betty Chebet was equally dominant, producing an imperious display to clinch gold in the W35 discus throw. The early medal standings paint a picture of Kenyan dominance, with podium finishes flowing in race walking, middle-distance, long-distance and field events.
Kenya had gotten off to a bright start on Monday with veteran race walker Eric Sikuku and Peter Wanjiru delivering a golden start for the nation on Saturday. Sikuku drew first blood for Kenya, powering to gold in the M50 10km race walk with a winning time of 49:35.
Distance ace Wanjiru followed suit, producing a masterclass in endurance to capture the M40 10,000m title in 31:14, Kenya’s second gold medal in Daegu.
