Baraton College, Eldoret Bible College Listed among 15 Institutions Illegally Offering Degrees

The Commission for University  Education (CUE) has released a list of 15 Kenyan institutions offering degree programs without their approval.

In a notice posted on its social media pages on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, CUE said the said institutions were offering the programs without the grant of authority to collaborate.

The commission has established that the following institutions are offering degree and postgraduate diploma programmes without Grant to operate,” read part of the notice.

For the avoidance of doubt, any institution operating as a university or degree awarding that does not appear on the commission list of approved institution is illegal, and their degree qualifications will not be recognized in Kenya,” it added.

Top on the list for the institutions offering degrees and postgraduate diplomas without approval is Uasin Gishu-based  Eldoret Bible College and Kapsabet’s Baraton College.

Others listed are Al-Munawarrah College in Mombasa, Grace Bible College (Vihiga), Kitale’s Africa Theological Seminary and Logos University in Kakamega.

  8. Breakthrough Bible College – Nairobi
  9. Theophillus Theological College – Kiambu
  10. Northwestern Christian University – Kakamega
  11. Logos University – Kakamega
  12. Harvest Land University – Kisumu
  13. Word of Faith Bible College – Vihiga
  14. Kenya Anglican University, Kanyuambora – Embu
  15. The Eastern University Bradegate International University – Nyeri

How many universities are authorized to operate in Kenya

The commission also listed 35 public universities, five public university constituent colleges and 28 private universities it said were authorized to operate in Kenya.

National Defense University-Kenya and National Intelligence Research University are also authorized to operate as specialized degree-awarding universities.

Two other institutions, Hekima University College and Marist International University College, are legally operating as private university constituent colleges.

In addition, 6 institutions have letters of interim authority. They include GRETSA University, Riara University, Pionner International University, International Leadership University, AMREF International University and Uzima University.

Before enrolling, make sure your institution is recognised to ensure quality education and credibility,” CUE advised Kenyans.
