Kenya will soon have two additional level VI health facilities.
This is after the Cabinet on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, approved the construction of the facilities in Bungoma and Kericho counties.
According to the Cabinet despatch, the decision is part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s effort to enhance access to healthcare through the Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
“In line with the government’s focus on achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improving access to quality healthcare, especially in underserved regions, Cabinet approved the construction of two Level VI teaching and referral hospitals in Bungoma and Kericho counties,” read part of the despatch.
The hospitals will be constructed by the government in partnership with the African Development Bank.
Which are level 6 hospitals in Kenya
Currently, Kenya has five public level six hospitals. They are the Kenyatta National Hospital, Mathari Mental Hospital, National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIR) Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Level 6 hospitals are the highest level of healthcare facilities, serving as national referral hospitals and teaching/research institutions.
