Date Set for Eldoret City Marathon’s 7th Edition as Uasin Gishu County Injects Ksh15m

The date has been set for the seventh edition of the Eldoret City Marathon.

An official media launch for the marathon that prides itself as the highest paying in Africa was held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Uasin Gishu County headquarters.

During the launch, the County Government of Uasin Gishu announced a sponsorship of Ksh 15 million.

When will 2026 Eldoret City Marathon be held?

Race director Moses Tanui announced that this year’s Eldoret City Marathon will be held on April 26, 2026.

Tanui said the theme remains ‘Climate Action’ placing environmental conversation at the heart of its agenda.

The focus will be on promoting sustainable practices, tree planting initiatives and raising awareness on the impact of climate change,” said the former Boston Marathon champion.

He also expressed confidence that the marathon will not only deliver thrilling competition but also champion environmental responsibility, aligning sport with sustainability.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii who was the chief guest at the media launch noted that the marathon continues to grow in stature, attracting elite and upcoming athletes while boosting sports tourism and local economic activity.

The county signed an agreement with the marathon’s management that will guide their involvement and cooperation.

What is the Eldoret City Marathon prize money?

Since its inception, the Eldoret City Marathon has built a reputation as one of Africa’s most competitive road races, offering lucrative prize money and drawing participation from top runners across the globe.

Winners for both men and women’s category is awarded about Ksh 3.5 million.

Athletes who finish among the top 20 also walk away with cash prices.
