The County Government of Uasin Gishu has officially launched the Governor’s Cup Football Tournament, a competition that seeks to empower youth through identification and nurturing of talents right from the grassroots.
The tourney, which offers Ksh 1 million to the winner at the county level, also fundamentally offers a platform for Uasin Gishu youth to monetize their talents and exhibit their abilities.
The tournament, one of the biggest county-sponsored football competitions in the region, is aimed at identifying and nurturing young talent while promoting unity, social cohesion, and economic empowerment through sports.
Speaking during the launch at Naiberi Primary School in Ainabkoi Sub-County on Saturday, July 18, 2027, Governor Dr Jonathan Bii said the tournament mirrors his administration’s commitment to making sports a viable economic undertaking while assisting the youth to monetize their talents. This is the fifth pillar in Dr Bii’s development agenda.
“This program is more than just a tournament. It is a broader plan that gives our young people opportunities to showcase and make money out of their talents,” Bii said.
“And because Uasin Gishu is a cosmopolitan county, this tournament is also a way to strengthen cohesion because sports is the biggest unifying agent known the world over,” he added.
Uasin Gishu Governor’s Cup tournament structure
The tournament begins at the ward level across all 30 wards before progressing to the sub-county level and culminating in the county’s and final championships.
Besides the Ksh 1 million prize for the county champions, winning teams at the sub-county and ward levels will also receive Ksh 500,000 and Ksh 100,000, respectively.
Representatives from the county assembly, led by MCA for Kaptagat, Jonathan Ng’etich, said youth form the biggest portion of the population and that they should be empowered to bring about economic change in their societies.
Sports Committee vice chair, Tabitha Wamboi, also echoed the sentiments.
County Executive Committee Member for Youth Affairs and Sports, Robert Kemei, says the tournament has been structured to ensure every ward participates, providing equal opportunities for talented players to be scouted. County Executives Eng Lucy Ng’endo (Education), Sam Kotut (Agriculture), Dr Philip Chebunet (Trade), Loice Murrey (Public Service) were in attendance.
Chief Officer for Sports, CPA Victorine Kapkiai, noted that the initiative complements the county’s broader strategy of positioning Uasin Gishu as a leading sports hub while creating opportunities for youth to monetize their talents.
The tournament has registered over 600 teams, all eying the penultimate prize of Ksh 1 million. Football stakeholders are primed to closely follow the tourney as they seek to replenish their stables by recruiting new talents from the tournament.
Chief Of Staff, Dr Pius Chumba, Chief Officers, Directors, administrators and other county officials attended the tournament’s kick-off.
