Eldoret City Poised for Transformation as Development Momentum Builds

Eldoret, the country’s newest city, is set for rapid transformation following its recent elevation from a municipality to city status by President Dr. William Ruto.

The upgrade opens doors to expanded opportunities, positioning Eldoret as a regional hub for trade, sports, innovation, and urban growth.

Opportunities that come with Eldoret’s city status

With its new status, Eldoret is expected to attract both local and international investors, create jobs, and strengthen its role as the gateway to the North Rift.

The city’s elevation also comes with increased government support for infrastructure and urban planning, cementing its place as a key driver of Kenya’s socio-economic agenda.

Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim expressed optimism about Eldoret’s future, saying: “This city status is not just a title, but a responsibility. We are determined to build a modern, well-planned, and prosperous Eldoret that will serve our people better, attract investors, and remain a source of pride for generations.”

Who is the Eldoret City Board chairperson?

To guide this transformation, Governor Bii recently appointed Julius Kitur as the first Chairperson of the Eldoret City Board.

Kitur, who previously chaired the Eldoret Municipality Board, brings a wealth of experience in urban management and development.

We have a golden opportunity to shape Eldoret into one of Africa’s model cities. Our focus as the City Board will be on inclusive planning, infrastructure expansion, and ensuring that services reach every resident of Eldoret,” Kitur said.

Infrastructure development remains at the core of Eldoret’s growth. Through the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP), the county is tarmacking key access roads in informal settlements to improve security, mobility, and livelihoods.

In addition, the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP) is expected to roll out major works on tarmac roads and service lanes across the city. These upgrades will ease congestion, open up business corridors, and ensure smoother transport networks within Eldoret’s growing urban centre.

Which stadiums are in Eldoret city?

Eldoret’s reputation as the “City of Champions” continues to grow. The completion of the 64 Stadium and Kipchoge Stadium – set to be world-class talent centres – will further cement Eldoret as a global athletics hub, home to legends like Eliud Kipchoge.

The facilities will nurture young athletes, host international competitions, and boost sports tourism in the region.

Another major project underway is the Eldoret 64 ultra-modern market, located at the heart of the Central Business District.

Once completed, the modern facility will host hundreds of traders and serve as a key marketplace for agricultural products from across Uasin Gishu and neighbouring counties. The market will enhance trade efficiency and promote agribusiness value chains.

Are Eldoret traffic lights working?

To tackle traffic congestion, the county has begun installing traffic lights across key intersections in Eldoret.

This move will enhance order, improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, and introduce a modern traffic management system befitting the new city status.

Governor Bii’s administration is keen on ensuring orderly development through physical planning and development control.

The city’s new planning framework will guide zoning, construction, and investment, ensuring a sustainable and well-structured urban environment.

In line with the national government’s agenda, President William Ruto recently launched the Affordable Housing Programme in Eldoret. The initiative will provide decent housing for residents, create jobs in the construction sector, and improve the quality of life for thousands of families.

The county government has also introduced UG Pay, an improved revenue collection system designed to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability. The system will strengthen the county’s financial base, ensuring more resources are available for development projects and essential services.

With strong leadership, completed milestones like the renovated headquarters, and ongoing infrastructure projects supported by both county and national governments, Eldoret City is on track to become a modern, vibrant, and globally competitive urban centre. Its transformation promises better livelihoods for residents, new opportunities for investors, and a proud future for Uasin Gishu County.
